believe in exfoliation: chemical vs mechanical

Chemical vs Mechanical Exfoliation for Your Clients

Skin is amazing. It constantly renews itself and regular exfoliation boosts this process. Exfoliation improves the overall tone and texture of the skin. By removing dead skin cells on the top layer of skin (which cause dullness), cell turnover speeds up and leaves a fresher appearance. If you’re wondering whether chemical vs mechanical exfoliation is best for your clients, this is the blog for you!

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an excellent remedy for a host of skin concerns. Clients are often aware that it is possible to over exfoliate. Over exfoliation can damage the skin barrier and remove healthy oils. This can contribute to dryness, breakouts and sensitivity issues. Clients often prefer to leave it to the professionals – and put you in charge of their skin.

SkinBase MDPro

The SkinBase MDPro system is dual functioning. It allows you to switch handsets to offer mechanical exfoliation (SkinBase Microdermabrasion) or chemical exfoliation (SkinBase Hydro) depending on your clients’ needs.

Chemical vs Mechanical

Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals or acids to remove damaged cells. The solution can be tailored to suit skin type. Mechanical exfoliation involves rubbing something abrasive over skin to remove dead cells. It can be a scrub – or a machine, like crystal microdermabrasion.  Neither exfoliation treatment is better or worse. They serve different purposes depending on your clients’ needs.

SkinBase Hydro – Chemical Exfoliation

Hydro is a revitalising treatment that has a multi-step process to renew and refresh skin. It starts with a peel packed with active ingredients to exfoliate skin. A blend of AHAs and BHAs penetrate the pores to exfoliate dead skin and debris. Then you have a choice of serum, depending on your client’s skin concerns. A vacuum handset helps to infuse the chosen serum allowing the active ingredients to get to work. Lock the serum in with the SkinBase Essentials range to maintain the post-hydro glow for longer. Always remind your clients to use SPF daily to protect the new exposed skin.

Microdermabrasion – Mechanical Exfoliation

MD uses a wand to expel a jet of fine non-allergenic crystals over the skin. These crystals slough away the top layer of dead skin, while a vacuum action sucks away the debris. The dual action stimulates blood flow and helps to resurface the skin – boosting the body’s own natural collagen production at the same time. You can spend longer on problem area to encourage the skin to rejuvenate itself. The result is a fresher more even skin tone. Don’t forget the importance of moisturiser and SPF afterwards.

Chemical vs Mechanical Exfoliation

Both Microdermbrasion and Hydro are effective treatments for dull and dry skin. Their main goal is to reveal fresh new skin cells below the upper layer. They can also target problem skin like acne or pigmentation. While one dissolves dead skin cells with a chemical ingredient ( AHAs and BHAs), the other is a physical exfoliator that buffs the top layer of skin off.  The both have their place in a customised skincare plan – so it is ideal to offer both so you can give your clients the best treatment for their skin.
