SkinBase began in the UK in 2005, founded by brother and sister Richard and Leesa Faulkner. In 2024, we launched in the US at the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference (IECSC) in New York. Read on to find out how we got there…
The SkinBase Promise
The SkinBase Mission is to help beauty professionals to offer the latest in beauty technology at an affordable price, while providing the professional training, marketing and support needed to succeed.
Who Is SkinBase?
Since 2005, SkinBase has helped thousands of skincare specialists around the world create thriving aesthetics businesses because of one simple belief: that non-surgical aesthetic equipment shouldn’t be locked behind financial barriers.
The idea for SkinBase came from Leesa’s experience in her salon. Reliability problems with a leading brand microdermabrasion machine meant canceled treatments and lost revenue. Their father, Keith, an engineer, set out to build a more reliable system. The result was the MDPro.
Two Week Free Trial
Richard knew that entering a new market without the backing of a big brand name would be difficult. Beauty professionals needed more than a machine demonstration to feel confident about bringing a new treatment from an unknown brand into their businesses. So, he decided a bolder approach to showcasing the new system was necessary, and SkinBase introduced the two-week free trial.
Beauty professionals could experience the effectiveness and reliability of the machine firsthand, with their own clients. The trial allowed them the confidence to invest in SkinBase, and in turn, invest in their own businesses, without paying a cent.
“We were new to the industry and I personally spent a lot of time speaking to salon owners and working out what they needed in order to make the business a success. We built up a process that worked for us around the free trial offer and that has largely remained the same. I’ve always wanted the focus to be on providing a great service and making it as easy as possible for salons to do business with us.”
Training and Support
The team knew that in order to make it as easy as possible for salons to invest in SkinBase, they needed training and ongoing support. So that is what they did. As Richard began selling machines from his house, Leesa traveled the country to provide free training and teach beauty therapists how to use the SkinBase Microdermabrasion system.
SkinBase Pay As You Go System
When the Great Recession hit in 2008, some beauty professionals who had completed a successful trial could no longer secure financing to buy a machine. Richard remortgaged his home to help fund another option.
SkinBase introduced the automated PAYG system, using our patented technology to record treatment data, in 2009. This allowed us to offer systems on a rental basis, and made professional treatments more accessible for businesses of all sizes.
